Pilates Foundations - This course involves an introduction to the history and principles of Pilates. It consists of learning, practicing, and teaching Matwork Foundations. Students should have a good understanding of the pilates repertoire before taking the course. Students will learn to design and teach a pilates matwork class (or private) based on a postural assesment. These Pilates matwork fundamentals have been proven to reduce injury, create better alignment and increase overall balance to the body by building core stabilization.

The Pilates Method Alliance
Pilates is a generic term which refers to a type of exercise which includes specific characteristics which stem from the work of Joseph H. Pilates. He and his wife Clara immigrated to New York City from Germany in 1926. Pilates invented specific equipment and exercises that are used for therapy and conditioning. None of this was ever trademarked. Various styles of Pilates have since been created and taught world wide.
The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) was established as a not for profit organization "to protect the public by establishing certification and continuing education standards for Pilates professionals" while maintaining the original standards and philosophy created by Joseph Pilates. Pilates Method Alliance acts as an umbrella organization for all styles of Pilates.
